Surgery and hair loss
It is quite common to temporarily remove an area of hair in preparation for surgery or for there to be some loss of hair around a scar area following an operation. If hair loss does occur this is only in the area where surgery takes place and not the entire body. This means that your scalp hair may not be affected at all.
The hair commonly grows back again but some people can be left with an area of permanent baldness on a scar area . If hair loss does occur there is plenty that can be done to help you feel and look good.
There are four main types of cancer surgery that you may be offered:
Diagnosis - To investigate cancer as part of a diagnosis (biopsy)
Treatment - To try and remove all or part of a tumour or areas affected by cancer
Staging - To asses cancer reduction during various forms of treatment
Reconstruction- To restore internal or external areas of the body
When considering if you will be effected by hair loss, remember that any effect on the hair would only be in an isolated area where surgery is taking place so it may not cause you any concern at all.
