Returning to your regular hairdresser after a period of time

Many people find that they do see a specialist hairdresser, wig fitter or hair loss expert for a period of time during hair loss or treatment. Or perhaps you have been wearing a wig or head scarf for some time and have not seen your hairdresser for a while. So when it’s time to visit your old hairdresser again many people say that they feel uncomfortable for a number of reasons. These are commonly:

• I feel bad that I visited a new hairdresser
• I didn’t tell my old hairdresser that I have cancer and am not sure how to tell them
• I don’t want a fuss made when I go back to the salon
• I am concerned that my hairdresser wouldn’t know how to manage my new hair growth

If you see a hairdresser on a regular basis it is not uncommon to build up a very friendly relationship. Hairdressers really are very used to customers coming and going and then coming back again all the time. It really is an everyday situation for your hairdresser, so please don’t feel bad that you visited a different hairdresser for a time.

It is a good idea to give your hairdresser a call in advance for an appointment. This way you can have a chat with them in private and update them on your circumstances. You can also ask them what services they offer. If you don’t wish to discuss your cancer or its treatment then just explain that you would prefer to discuss issues on the phone, but not in the salon. You could also ask if they have a private area or room in the salon if you are feeling nervous. You should feel free to tell them what would make you feel more comfortable and normally hairdressers are only too pleased to hear from you and help however they can.

You may not be aware that most hairdressers are used to having chats with their clients on the phone, and they are more then happy to discuss all kinds of concerns and questions, so do call for a chat. It should help put your mind at rest. I have never come across a hairdresser who is not more then happy to hear from an old client and offer them advice and support.
