Radiotherapy– New hair growth to the head area

If you have had Radiotherapy to the head and scalp area you will have had a discussion with your radiographer about hair loss. Thus you should have an overview of your treatment, and covered hair loss and where it may occur as well as information about whether the hair will grow back.

It’s fair to say that offering advice on new hair growth following Radiotherapy to the scalp is difficult as it is normally so specific to you. In other words depending on how much hair has been lost, the condition of your scalp, strength of new hair growth and other factors all need to be taken into consideration. These are all things that are specific to you. In this section we will introduce you to some ideas, techniques and services that may be helpful.

In general if you have been advised that the hair will grow back, then you will normally find it takes a little while. Normally after your treatment, as long as the scalp is healing well, it takes between 6–8 months for there to be enough hair (approx an inch) to integrate into a short hair style.

It may be a little thinner than before and can be different in both texture and colour and sometimes grow back a bit patchy. But there is plenty that can be done to help provide an optimum opportunity for new hair growth. Clever styles and techniques to blend in thinner or shorter areas of hair can make a great difference.

Take a look through the subjects that are most relevant to you – the following advice is for people who have had radiology to the head and experienced hair loss.
