There are many different forms of treatment for cancer. In other categories we have covered chemotherapy, radiology, hormone treatment and surgery.
This section entitled “other forms of treatments or therapies and hair loss” is grouped together because at the time of writing there are normally no known side effects relating to hair loss or drastic changes to the hair reported.
Because many of the treatments and therapies listed below are given alongside other treatments such as chemotherapy that may cause hair loss please do read the sections about other treatments as applicable to you.
Although these therapies do not have hair loss as a side effect, it is true that any change to the body, such as illness, can have an effect on the condition of your scalp and hair, but hopefully not to the extent of hair loss.
Please remember that treatments, brands and side effects are changing and updating all of the time. So if in doubt please always ask your doctor or your medical team who are there to help you.
Hair loss is not commonly associated with any of the treatments below:• Stem cell and bone marrow transplants
•
Biological therapies • Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy•
Hypothermia treatment• Photodynamic therapy• Supportive therapies• Complementary therapies • Holistic therapiesIf you are having any of the treatments above, either on their own or alongside other forms of treatment and you are concerned about hair loss, I would suggest that you speak to your medical team. Just clarify which treatments you are having and confirm whether or not hair loss will affect you.
It is fair to say that illness can cause changes to your hair and scalp and sometimes hair loss. But it is rare that hair loss would result in you needing to wear a wig or head covering. If you are noticing changes to your hair and scalp then take a look at
Hair and Scalp Care for tips on managing changes. You could also visit a
Trichologist who is an expert in hair loss conditions.
