Helpful tips for your first visit to the wig supplier
Most hair loss wig suppliers will provide the following services – but do check:
• A private area
• Allow you to bring a friend
• Offer cutting and colour services for preparation for hair loss and your new growth
• A return service – if your wig is unworn (within a certain time frame) for an exchange
• A choice of NHS funded and other wigs
• Customising of your wig to suit your face shape (cutting is normally included within the wig price)
• A return visit - after you have been wearing your wig for a few weeks to make any adjustments and recommendations
• Cleaning and styling of real hair wigs
• Sale of specialist headscarves and head wear
• Sale of accessories and wig care items
• Other hair loss services – such as permanent make-up e.g eyebrows (only suitable after chemo treatment and approved by your doctor)
Making an appointment and planning your visit
Most wig suppliers ask that you book an appointment in advance. Your appointment time will normally be between 45 to 90 minutes. It may be necessary to make a second appointment to customise and fit your wig. Ask if there is a charge for a consultation - normally there is not.
Here are some helpful tips:
• It is best recommended, if you can, that you visit a wig supplier BEFORE cutting your hair short and prior to hair loss so that they can see how your natural hair is. But don’t worry if this is not possible, take a picture of your most recent hair style
• Take along pictures of hair styles you have had and liked and also if you fancy a change take a look through hair magazines or wig brochures for some inspiration
• It may be helpful to write down/take with you any key information as it may be helpful to the person advising you. For example key dates and any information about hair loss/thinning and your treatment you may have (especially time frame for hair loss). If you are not sure ask your doctor or nurse
• NHS prescription/referral letter - don’t forget to take this with you - most of the time this will have been sent or faxed by your hospital in advance
• If you wear glasses do remember to take them with you
• It’s a good idea to try and allow plenty of time for your visit, make sure you know where parking is available and plan to arrive early so you are not in a rush
• Give yourself some time to think about what you want. Remember that the good thing about a wig is that if you are not happy you can always get another and try something different
