You really don’t need to give up on looking good or your individual style because now, more then ever, there are so many ways to cover up without compromising on your look. Did you know that there are over 400 different “specialist” head scarves and hundreds of wigs available in nearly every style, hair texture and colour?
So with a little know how, tips and contacts you really can disguise hair loss and look great with it. In this section we will introduce you to a host of ideas.
Firstly let’s look at why it’s recommended to cover up:
Practical reasons to cover up:
• Warmth – Your head loses heat, very quickly especially at night• Protection - Sun light, even winter sun can burn the sensitive scalp area (unless advised you are best recommended to avoid sun exposure during chemotherapy and radiology treatment)
• Skin can be extra sensitive during treatment, dry, itchy, spotty scalps are a common side effect so covering up can help to reduce possible skin infections and irritation
• Sense of wellbeing –Perhaps one of the most important reasons. Covering up gives you privacy and helps to maintain a sense of your individual style
Naturally there may be some times when you just wish to be bare
• For example after a bath or shower, relaxing at home, or somewhere that you feel comfortable.
• Some people have a bare scalp all of the time, but most people choose to cover up, for both their own privacy and to protect the scalp.
Remember - it is best advised that this should be both a practical and individual choice for you to decide upon.
There are two main options of covering up either:
Headwear such as scarves and hats
or
Wigs, weaves, extensions and hair replacements.
